“Attitude is more important than facts.” – Each person is free to choose their own. Attitude control has a lot of advantages. When you learn to regulate your own mental and emotional approach to life’s events and circumstances, you have more power of choice.
You can be more in charge of your own life instead of surrendering important choices to unreasonable expectations of yourself; other people’s will; fearful imagination; transference from old memories; and projections due to assumptions.
When thoughtfully choosing your attitude you can:
- Open your mind;
- See broader perspectives;
- Get along with other people easier;
- Have ‘possibility thinking’ in the face of challenging circumstances;
- Have the humility to own one’s own part in things;
- Wait for or seek information instead of assume;
- Regulate your own energy dynamics (temperament) and choose how to respond;
- ‘Observe and consider’ instead of immediately react;
- Cooperate and work with reality instead of fight it;
- Have enough time and space mentally to choose a friendly way to be with yourself in the face of stress;
- Assess situations to see what part is your responsibility (if any)… or how you might want to respond.
- Think things through for practical common-sense application;
- Stay clear on ‘Walking the Line’ between what the mind makes up and what is really happening;
Then, there are the FACTS. And while they can be valuable in some important ways they can’t substitute for taking care of our participation in life.
- Facts are just dry raw data. They can tell us where we are, but not what to do.
- Facts can sometimes be vague regarding the overall situation and not necessarily helpful in a way that would translate well for practical application.
- Facts don’t show you the way to the next step.
- Facts can’t help you without the attitudes of mind and motivation to lead the way.
- Facts don’t help choose your point of view.
These things are all worth contemplating.
You can bring your life into a more stable, reasonable and workable place and build self-confidence through choosing and owning your own attitude.
You can reduce your internal stress by choosing an attitude that makes sense for the situation you find yourself in.
You can be bigger than your circumstances and moods.
You can connect with your self-awareness and choose to be grounded and ready for what life is bringing to you.
You can choose your attitude and help your life work better.
